Welcome to QVC Fashion Month week two! This week’s focus is on MarlaWynne, a fashion brand only available in the UK at QVC. This comfortable and elegant collection includes tops, knitwear, trousers and a mix of outerwear created in soft fabrics with unique prints. We had the pleasure of catching a few minutes with Marla Wynne Ginsburg – the founder and designer of the brand to grill her on everything from her proudest achievement, to which QVC presenter she’d bring with her to fight a zombie apocalypse!
QG: Hi Marla! Can you tell us about your first job?
MW: I sold photocopy paper door to door. Then I sold radio time for a rock and roll station in St. Louis, followed by PR for an elegant hotel that was near my University. I got to live in the hotel like Eloise of the Plaza and booked amazing talent for all of the hotels events. As a massive lover of Jazz it really was great fun and one of my favourite jobs ever!
QG: If you weren’t in your current profession, what do you think you would be doing instead?
MW: I probably would have remained in the entertainment industry and continued to produce television series.
QG: Where have you visited in your life that took your breath away?
MW: Bali, Tokyo, Hong Kong,
QG: What are the achievements you’re most proud of?
MW: Raising two beautiful children and having a circle of friends around the world who I have known since my 20’s and 30’s.
QG: Who would you be most star-struck to meet in real life?
MW: I have had the opportunity to meet many famous people in my life. While I have admired and respected many, I am not prone to being “star struck”. Celebrities hold little interest, while great thinkers and writers do. Great doctors, fireman and soldiers, and people who change our world vs influencers of pop culture. It has been my experience that when you get to know famous or extremely accomplished individuals, what bonds us is our common experience of being someone’s child, someone’s parent or friend. I am most struck by someone’s humanity or kindness.
QG: What are your top tips for realising your goals in business or in life?
MW: Take the time to imagine where you want to be and what you want to accomplish. Keep imagining it until you can really “see it”. Once you can truly see where you want to be or what you want to accomplish then take action. Do something everyday to move your life forward. Understand that great accomplishments often don’t come easy; it takes hard work and faith in yourself. You have to keep reminding yourself every day of where you want to go in life and then nurturing that dream with patience and hard work.
QG: What are your top beauty, style and home décor tips?
MW: On BEAUTY: Embrace who you are and make the most of your unique self. Don’t strive to fit anyone’s standard but your own. True beauty does come from within and there is nothing more beautiful than confidence, happiness and a smile.
ON STYLE: Style is the ability to embrace who you are and express your individuality through the choices you make. Find what you love about yourself and the world you live in, then artfully integrate elements of those things into your way of “being” to present yourself in the world. I favour uniqueness over trends.
HOME DÉCOR: I don’t believe in “decorating”. I am a collector of memories and have tried to artfully surround myself with objects, paintings, photographs and colours that surround me like a welcome cocoon. I like my house to be a home, one that is welcoming to my family and friends – a comfortable place where you can put your feet up and your glass down without a coaster.
QG: If you could travel back in time, which era would you visit and what would you do?
MW: While wrought with social and political challenges, there is no time but the present and no period in history I would want to be part of other than this complicated and increasingly crazy world we live in.
QG: What three things would you bring to a desert island?
MW: If I had to be on a desert island alone, I’d have to find a window to jump from as I would die of loneliness and longing for the familiarity of those I love.
QG: And finally, if you were facing a zombie apocalypse, which three QVC presenters would be on your survival team?
MW: OK… This one is really one I can’t answer! However, Kathy Tayler would be the host I’d want to tell about it!
QG: Thanks Marla! – We’re off to find Kathy! x
