What’s your number?
No, I’m not asking for your phone number, but if I said 1, 9, 15, 20 and 100, what would you think?
Would you think they were prime numbers? Well, some of them are.
Maybe you’re thinking they are winning lottery numbers? They might be.
Or, perhaps you’re thinking they are the combination to unlock something? Well with that guess, you might just be right!
They are in fact the numbers of Liz Earle‘s Botanical Essence Eau De Parfum range. This selection will unlock a world of some of the most beautiful fragrances and moods you have ever had the joy of being enveloped in.
I choose my words carefully, as that is exactly what the right fragrance can do. It can create a ‘mood’ that is wished for, perhaps even longed for, be that sensual, sultry or sophisticated. It can create an impression of strength, vulnerability or even power. Do not underestimate what you can do for yourself with the right, carefully-chosen, scent.
Our sense of smell is our most primal and was the very first to develop as we evolved. It is the most memory-evocative and the one which, to me, feels the most strongly connected to our brains. Most of us underestimate what our scent can do, not just for us but also others.
It is for these reasons, among many, that I keep a personal fragrance library. Sometimes I use fragrance to enhance my existing mood and other times to create one; either my own or of those around me.
It’s very useful when attending important gatherings at work or a job interview, where you may want to create an impression of authority. It’s equally effective for occasions requiring a softer edge, for instance intimate dates when you want to draw someone closer to you. I have fragrances that are specific to a time of day, season, or even what I am wearing.
That’s why I’m so thrilled that the Liz Earle team are bringing us a fragrance-based Today’s Special Value on Tuesday 5th December: The Heavenly Scented Beauty Collection.
The set includes a choice of Botanical Essence Eau De Parfum (50ml) fragrances, and also a Cleanse and Polish (200ml) pump with two muslin cloths and Rosemary and Rock Rose Hand Repair (150ml). This makes the perfect self-gift (because you are worth it) or an indulgent treat for someone you want to make feel special.
How to choose which fragrance though? Always a key question, so I have broken each of the fragrances down to see if my description can help you recognise which one you are – or – would like to be!
Each Liz Earle fragrance uses opulent damask rose at its core, but it is the expert blending of other florals, spices, woody and fresh notes that creates the varied range.
Botanical Essence No.1 Eau De Parfum
A clean fragrance to make you feel fresh and alive, full of vibrant energy and hope. It’s a great go-to fragrance, perfect for any occasion or time of year, though probably more for the daytime. Also, with its minimum sillage*, it can easily be worn in the workplace. With its Mediterranean vibe, you can wear this in summer to feel clean and fresh, or in winter to wake up the senses and recall memories of sun-warmed skin. It feels natural, zesty and uplifting.
Top notes: Italian bergamot, mandarin, bitter orange, lemon and cardamom
Heart notes: geranium, damask rose, lavender, coriander and nutmeg
Base notes: cedarwood, vetiver, tonka bean
*sillage – coming from the French word for ‘wake’, as in the trail left by a boat in water, it refers to the trail of scent left behind by a perfume.
Botanical Essence No. 9 Eau De Parfum
A warm and inviting scent perfect for autumn/winter, this evocative scent is reminiscent of woodland walks, fresh earth, and juicy winter berries. It opens with juicy blackcurrant notes, followed by the warmth and vibrancy of red ginger, and then transitioning to velvety notes of damask rose and comforting patchouli. The latter is always a favourite note of mine and a common thread running through many of my favourite fragrances. This fragrance finally settles into gorgeous green and woody notes from vetiver, with warm and smooth vanilla . This is easy to wear as a day-to-evening fragrance due to its depth and richness of character.
Top notes: blackcurrant bud, bergamot and red ginger
Heart notes: osmanthus*, damask rose, patchouli
Base notes: oakmoss, Hawaiian vetiver, vanilla
*Osmanthus: a flower that doesn’t have a traditional floral smell, rather it often has a distinct fruity aroma. Smells very like peaches and apricots, often used to blend fruity and floral notes together in a sweet natural way.
Botanical Essence No. 15 Eau De Parfum
Containing 15 botanical ingredients, this sultry fragrance is full of exotic spiciness with sparkling peppery notes, as well as the deep warming sensuality of clove. It balances the freshness of bergamot with the creamy and comforting notes of guaiac wood in the top notes, immediately creating a fresh yet calming effect. This fragrance is fresh, sensual, spicy, clean and sexy in turns. It’s a sophisticated blend perfect for winter days and sophisticated evening gatherings. The team at Liz Earle call it a ‘cashmere wrap in a bottle’ for a very good reason – it’s the fragrance equivalent of wrapping up warm in winter.
Top notes: bergamot, cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood, guaiac wood
Heart notes: tonka bean, cypriol, benzoin, damask rose and elemi
Base notes: cinnamon leaf, clove bud, pink pepper, bourbon vanilla, vetiver
Botanical Essence No. 20 Eau De Parfum
Created to celebrate 20 years of the Liz Earle brand, this fragrance has a lot to represent: the ethos of the brand, the customers who shop with them, and (of course) Liz herself. I think it achieves all of this beautifully.
As I mentioned earlier, rose, and indeed, decadent damask rose is always at the heart of a Liz Earle fragrance, but here it is not just the central theme, but the star attraction. This fragrance is a stunning floral with hints of ‘otherness’ that leads you along a path of olfactory exploration, adding intrigue as each note is revealed.
Citrus notes like mandarin and bergamot help cut through any potential headiness, and pink pepper notes keep things light and sparkling, while white florals like exotic jasmine provide elements of luxury, decadence and sophistication.
This is a sophisticated fragrance that speaks of class and substance, and never overwhelms but always enhances. Thanks to its woody notes, it leaves a robust, rather than a floaty, feeling. It’s a floral and elegant daytime fragrance that can carry your femininity through to the evening.
Top notes: pink pepper, rose essential water, bergamot, manadarin
Heart notes: damask rose, Indian jasmine, carrot seed
Base notes: amyris, sandalwood, vanilla bean
Botanical Essence No. 100 Eau De Parfum
Crafted in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society to celebrate 100 years of the Chelsea Flower Show, this fragrance is a quintessentially-British florist in a bottle. I love it but then I am a fan of florals, and this one gives them to you in spades.
Like any good florist knows, a successful floral arrangement isn’t just about the flowers but also about the balance and blend of foliage. This fragrance is no different, marrying heady blooms with green stems and foliage. Opening with fresh notes of mandarin and bergamot, it isn’t purely punchy floral notes. It’s much more complex than that and captivates you with its intensity.
I always approve of an elegant jasmine note, effortlessly lending an immediate air of expensive indulgence. The scent then settles down to notes of sandalwood and vanilla, and a gorgeous white floral gardenia accord. I find this fragrance joyful and sublime in every way.
Easy to wear as an every day fragrance it will last you the best part of the day and can be worn in any situation where sophistication and elegance are key.
Top notes: mandarin, clove bud, bergamot, fressia accord
Heart notes: damask rose, Indian jasmine, orange flower, ylang-ylang, rose-scented geranium
Base notes: gardenia accord, vetiver, cypress, sandalwood, bourbon vanilla
