An afternoon at the Palace

41

Football No prizes for guessing where I was on Saturday afternoon.. yes, the new football season has kicked off and as I wasn't working I headed off to Selhurst Park for our first game.

For those of you who are interested, it ended in a draw, which is never very satisfactory. It was also a bit of a worry that Crystal Palace's best player (in my opinion!) was a lad we have on loan from West Ham!

I hardly dare write about football as I'm presenting some of the Butler & Wilson 14th Anniversary shows later in the week, and Simon always teases me about the subject matter of my blogs, particularly when they're football related!

I can't believe Simon's been coming to QVC for 14 years – I can still remember the very first show when he brought his Westie dog Paddington on air with him… probably for moral support! Look out for his shows on both Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th.

We also have Fashion Day coming up on Friday 14th, and although I'm not presenting on it, I'll definitely be looking out for the new Ronni Nicole styles as I just love her clothes – and judging by your comments on my blog, so do you!

Then later this month on Tuesday 25th it's Craft Day. I probably won't be in demand that day – it's not that I don't like craft, I'm just not very good at it! Recently I had a QVC Selection show with a few craft items in it, and knowing my lack of expertise, the lovely Dickie (who I went to the Pink concert with) made up a some great examples for me, bless him! One of the packs was available in the choice of Teal or Pink, which inspired him to create a Pink scrapbook page with some photos of our night out. I thought you might like to see a few, so here they are!

Julia and the gang at the O2   Julia and Vanessa enjoying dinner at the O2   Julia and pals arrive for the Pink concert

Speak soon,
Love,
Julia. xx.

    Hi Julia
Don’t know if you saw my post in your ‘about me’ topic. If you haven’t then you are a mind reader because I was asking you about Palace! A draw’s not the best start especially at home but at least Palace didn’t get beat! Onwards and upwards this season. I think I’ve said to you before I usually keep an eye out for Palace results now that I know you follow them. The Scottish season starts on Saturday an we will be raising the League flag at Ibrox on Saturday against Falkirk. I’m looking forward to that one. First time as a season ticket holder i will have seen that. Well you can tell Simon I always think your blogs are interesting even when they are not about your football team :-)
    Take care Julia

    Hi Steven
I must be a mind reader cos I hadn’t seen your original post in ‘about me’. Thanks for thinking of my team – did you see the debarcle at the weekend ………. we scored a goal but apparently 4 ‘men in black’ MISSED it! Neil Warnock and Simon Jordan went spare – I’m sure we haven’t heard the end of it. Last time we lost to Bristol City in the 2nd league game of the season we won promotion so I’m hoping it’s an omen. I wasn’t at the Torquay game cos I was working, but now that we have been drawn against Man City in the next round I’m trying to get my shift changed so that I can go – fingers crossed! I think I saw that Rangers won at the weekend?? I’m sure you enjoyed the day.

yes I did reply to you in the ‘about me’ section where you posted. You can use easy pays even if you are a new customer, provided the item is on easy pay at the time.
Pink is more than great she is FANTASTIC a really good show – how on earth does she sing live upside down on a trapeze????

    Hi Lindsay
Thanks for the good wishes for Palace – as I mentioned to Steven we were in the news for all the wrong reasons on Saturday – I think the Ref should have gone to Specsavers!!
I have to be careful wishing Rangers fans a good season as my sister’s entire family are Celtic fans – but may the best team win!

    Hi Julia
The decision on Saturday was an absolute Joke and it gets worse each time you see it. I can imagine what Warnock was like because he is quite heated at the best of times! That sounds like a good omen to me! Man City would be a good one to go to. We played them at Ibrox a couple of weeks back and beat them. I’m sure Palace could do the same!
Yes we won at the weekend. Us Gers fans on here have got you right into it now! Fingers crossed both our teams can keep winning and the referees are kinder :D

    Hi Steven,
I think even Bristol City fans would agree the decision was a joke ……….. maybe?!? Still we won last night away at Ipswich, very good result for us. You must have been pleased with the other BIG game last night – daren’t speak to my sister yet! QVC have been brilliant in re-arranging my day next Thursday so that I can go to the game – big thanks to Claire Sutton and Rachel, the Presenter scheduler – the latter of whom thinks I’m barking mad ……… no comments please. We have Newcastle at the weekend but can’t get to that one as I’m ‘on air”

    Hi Julia
Thanks for replying again so quickly! Bet you are loving being able to speak about Palace all time now!!
I don’t like a certain Mr Keane so was brilliant to see Palace winning and Man U got beat last night too!
Yes I have to admit I was jumping up and down when Arsenal scored. It will mean more money for us apart from anything else plus I always want Celtic to lose anyway. I suppose thats only natural with your big rivals. Who would Palace’s arch enemy be Julia?
I always said that Claire Sutton was an absolute star and an angel! – I’m sure you agree.
Look forward to seeing you ‘on air’ again soon.. cheers

    Hi Steven,
Starting to get nervous about Thursday now, particlarly after Saturday’s result, but to put that into perspective we didn’t have our first choice keeper as he got whacked in the throat in the Ipswich game – hope he’s back for Man City.
Not sure who our arch enemy would be really – traditionally Brighton/ Millwall/ Charlton ……… but they are all in lower divisions now. It’s certainly not the same as the Celtic/Rangers rivalry!
    Cross your fingers for Thursday

I hope you enjoy Thursday Julia. I will be rooting for Palace! You guys wear the right shirts too – red white n blue just like Rangers! Newcastle was always going to be a toughy with them having just been relegated. We find out who we play in the Champions League on Thursday and there is a good chance there could be an English team in our group. I could be travelling to one of the away games and I am gaurenteed a ticket for the home games. So I have my fingers crossed for 2 reasons on Thursday.
PS Saw your show with Ali Defoy and though both of you looked great!
Take care! Hope you don’t mind me hogging this particular blog! It’s like our private conversation!

    Hi Steven
Well we couldn’t quite manage to beat the multi millionaires of Man City, but we certainly gave it a go. It was amazing that ‘Sparky’ Hughes put out his best side, and there were Palace’s youngsters and war horses face to face (or should that be shoulder to shoulder) with the likes of Tevez, Robinho, Given, Adebayor and newly signed Lescott ………. it was vaguely surreal! We were really good in the first half and probably should have been at least a couple of goals to the good at half time but for some fantastic goalkeeping from Given. The early goal in the second half was a shame cos it was uphill all the way after that. Oh well, there’s always the FA Cup !
We’re on the telly again on Monday against Peterboro – I don’t suppose their team cost £200million +
Hope you are happy with your Champions League draw?

    Hi Julia
I was impressed with Palace in the game I have to say and you were very unlucky not be in front. As you say the gulf in class told eventually. The future looks promising though. I also watched bits of the game on monday I have to admit not all. Palace have made a reasonable start! Does the Premiership beckon>?! Must have been tough going from playin the millionaires to playing against P’Boro though. It is a similar situation when we play the likes of Kilmarnock(No offence meant) and then play in Europe. We got a great draw in terms of the teams for the Champions League but I would have liked a glamour game if I’m honest. A couple of years back we played Barcelona and I was at Ibrox that was fantastic. I think we have a chance but cant afford to be too confident because we have not got a lot of depth to our squad. It’s Scotland this weekend so you can back the same team as your family this week! I think I’ll allow you.
Thanks again so much for taking time out to reply to me. Take care gorgeous x

    Hi Steven,
Only just found this – I was away most of last week in Spain – my brother is staying at my house there for a holiday, so we overlapped there for a day, and my sister and 2 of my nieces (the Celtic contingent) were also in Spain so we all met up for dinner. It was great if slightly surreal to be sitting down to dinner all together in Spain!
I thought Palace did really well against Man City but were poor against Peterboro …….. I know what you mean about the difficulties of playing lower quality teams, it really is a different game.
Obviously I will be supporting England tonight (I hope you will be??), but I really hope Scotland can beat Holland and keep their World Cup qualification chance alive.
    We have Scunthorpe this weekend…………………

Sounds like you had a fab time in Spain Julia. It must be weird sitting down to a meal ina foreign country right enough! Well Scotland did it again last night… another brave failure. We actually played well and were unlucky. Unfortuntealy the damage was done before last night. I’m more a club first then country fan so glad it’s back to the Rangers at the weekend!
To be honest Julia I always want England to get beat!! Oops sorry… but I think it is more to do with the English media more than anything. Having said all that I do think England have a really good chance of winning the World Cup. For your sake fingers crossed on that one.
Thats strange Palace are playing Scunthorpe I work beside a guy that is a Scunny fan. I hope your team win. We are at Motherwell. As I have said before thank you very much for your reply again.

Regarding Elemis …… if you are going to go for facial products you will need to know your mum’s skin type, and kits with smaller sizes are always a good idea for trying a new range. One of my favourites from the range is ‘Skin Nourishing Milk Bath’ …….. heavenly!

    Hi Julia
I don’t know where to reply so I think I’ll just leave you a wee message in both ha ha. We certainly did miss McFadden you are right. I’m very impreessed with your knowledge of football – and I am not meaning to sound cheeky or sexist when I say – especially north of the border. Rangers play Stuttgart in the Champions League on Wednesday whcih is going to be tough. Be interesting to see what formation and tactics Walter Smith goes for as we got pelters for our tactics on route to the Uefa Cup Final. They were successful though!
Whci kind of nicely brings me to Palace. Couldn’t believe the scoreline when I saw it. I actually thought of you when I saw it. What did Mr Warnock do then? I won’t ponder over this one because I guess you wont want to discuss it much if you are anything like me. Keep your fingers crossed for Wednesday for us(don’t tell your family though) xxxxxx

    Hi Steven
Well done for your midweek result – no wonder you were smiling!
What a day I had yesterday. It was Beauty Day at QVC and I was down to present just a couple of shows in the evening, so I had planned to go to the footie and then in to work. Unfortunately Jill is not too well, so I was asked to cover her hours as well. Up at 5.15 ( haven’t done that in a while! ) on air at 9,10, and midday, off to the match, back on air at 20 and 21 ……….. crazy, but quite enjoyable in a weird way. Mind you I slept in til 11 this morning!
At least Palace won against Derby, but the match was not that good particularly the first half, and it’s a good job Speroni wasn’t sent off for handling outside the area as he went on to make 3 or 4 brilliant saves!

I think it’s been a little inconsistent the start from Palace and the same could be said for Rangers if I’m honest. We drew on Sat at Kilmarnock and Celtic scored a last minute winner – grrr! – yesterday to go top. The ups and downs of football eh!

That was a brilliant result for Palace. I was a bit shocked to see it if I’m honest as the Baggies have been flying. Must be quite frustrating with the incosistency of the team at the moment. I know all about that too!
Hopefully it’s a double success for our 2 teams on Tuesday.

Kept checking the score last night on my way into QVC – it was 0 – 0 for so long and then you guys seemed to fall apart. You’ll need to pull the stops out for the Old Firm game on Sunday.
0 – 0 was OK against Sheff Wednesday, but apparently our keeper (Speroni who I believe used to be at Dundee?) kept us in it in the 2nd half.
Will probs go to the Blackpool game before work on Saturday.

Yip as you said it was 0-0 for a long time and there was a few dubious decisions went against us before their first goal. However we were well beaten in the end. At least we have an ‘easier’ game on Sunday!!!!!! << Hope that doesn’t come back to haunt me. I am having a good week thanks. Bought myself some new clothes and things yesterday. I think that always give you a good feeling. Don’t you think? Speroni did used to play at Dundee yes. We play them in a cup game soon in Dundee. Blackpool are a decent team and they also have Charlie Adam an ex Rangers midfielder who has been doing exceptionally well for them since his summer move. It’s 4 goals in 5 I think. Split Loyalties for me on this one. No doubt you shall be the same on Sunday!! Again thanks for your reply. I enjoy our conversations and it seems you do too! Love Steven xx

Back to ‘our’ thread lol! Nah not a happy bunny at all today. We were absolutely atrocious last night. Total embarrassment and to be honest I wish we were out now. The next game is in Romania and I fear we will lose that too.
Palace should be able to win that one against Forest shouldn’t they. Are you going to that one? We play Hibs and I will be there as usual. Follow follow n all that. Glutton for punishment I think!
Manchester Utd won tonight too! Can’t stand them either. At this rate Celtic will beat Hamburg tomorrow to complete the week!

  35. julia roberts October 25, 2009 at 12:55 pm -  Reply

    Hi Steven
Yes I was at the Palace v Forest game – it was probs a fair result, we bossed the 1st half and they were marginally better in the 2nd, although their former player, Stern John, showed some class when he came on. I suppose they could argue that we were lucky to finish the game with 11 men – Clint Hill should probably have been sent off for leading with his elbow. We are a mid-table side at the moment – we need at least 2 new players for midfield and up front.
I think you only got a draw against Hibs too didn’t you?
At least Celtic lost to Hamburg, so your week wasn’t a total disaster.

We went on Saturday, and although Watford were no great shakes we actually played really well – Victor Moses was like a different player – must be auditioning for a move in the January transfer window!!! The news broke today that the players haven’t been paid this month yet – just when it’s going right on the pitch we’ve got issues off it. Just hope it all gets sorted and that we don’t go into administration again!
