My bad back keeps me home all week

Crikey it’s been a long week, and one I don’t wish to repeat in a hurry either! How I’ve missed the roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd – or whatever that strange expression is…

I’ve literally been flat on my back for the last seven days! Not sure what I did to set it all off, but what began as a stiff neck ended up with my whole spine seizing up.

I was actually at my Mum’s in Waltham Abbey when it got progressively worse. She very kindly took me to her surgery where I infuriated the receiptionist as she kept calling my name and it took me forever to turn my head and acknowledge I’d heard her! I was driven back home, got into bed and stayed there… for days.

It’s a funny thing when you have time away from your usual routine, you always think of all the things you should be doing. Like cleaning under the beds, defrosting the freezer or getting rid of the cobwebs you only ever see when you’re flat on your back!

However cleaning my teeth was about the most strenuous activity I got up to, and that wasn’t easy.  Luckily, thanks to some wonderful medication and excellent advice from various GPs, I’m up and on my way into QVC Towers to have the joy of a makeover from Mally beauty – I tell you, she’s going to have her work cut out for her!

On a serious note though, I know from all the lovely letters you write to me that for some of you, my last week in bed is how you spend a great deal of your time, and to be able to get up and do the most mundane of chores would be a Godsend to you. Watching my son Sam spend month after month unable to move after his motorbike accident last year was wretched, but he’s now coping very well, and will hopefully improve even further with more surgery next year.

So having had a week to watch QVC from the other side of the camera and order loads of Christmas presents just by pressing a few buttons, I hope you too will be finding the time and energy to head on towards the big day itself.

Oh, and any ideas for a truculent 15-year-old teenage boy who just wants money for Christmas would be a help!

Love Ali xx

    Hi Alison,
I hope you get well soon. i too have surffered from back problems for over 8 years now and have to spend a week at a time in bed when it’s at it’s worst. So i do understand what you mean by lying down and seeing all the cob webs and wishing you could just go about your daily business.i also order a lot from QVC while in bed feeling sorry for myself. You always cheer me up when i’m feeling low on my bad days.~So I would like to wish you well and don’t forget your ARNICA GEL if you can manage it.That gel is just magic. Look after yourself and i hope to speak to you one day when you are on air. Have a lovely christmas. xxx

Oh Alison i have along with many i know been stuggling to move around the house due to back pain i sympathise with you and think it must have been the cold weather because mine also started around the same time. I found a brilliant rub oil with cloves it did smell but worked wonders after being in bed for 4 days i would try anything. Just to say you are a brilliant presenter always cheerful and beautifully dressed keep up the good work. You don’t look 50 at all. Hope you all have a birthday thats great. Take care much love lizzie.x
