A weekend in New York and giant plants at home!

9.11 MemorialHello all!

I'm writing this blog in the departure lounge at JFK Airport in New York after the most fabulous weekend away with hubby. I love New York SO much; it really is my favourite place in the world after the UK.

I've been there many times – in my news reporter days I spent week after week there covering stories so I feel very at home there. It was so good to be back, as it's been a few years since my last visit. This time, as well as some serious shopping (naturally!) we also visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum for the first time.

My PhormiumIt really was one of the most extraordinarily moving things I've ever seen. The memorial (click on the pic above left to enlarge) - two huge waterfalls disappearing into a central void, marking the footprints of the Twin Towers, with the names of all the victims carved into the sides – is stunning, dramatic, and desperately sad.

But the exhibition itself, which contains video footage, wreckage, personal effects of the victims and so much more, was just devastating. It really makes you realise how incredibly precious life is and how you never, ever know what is just around the corner.

My very tall cactusOnto a completely different topic now! I'm not sure what's going on in my house and garden but everything is getting flipping ENORMOUS! I have a gunnera plant which is bigger than ever this year with leaves about four to five feet across; my phormium has a flower about 10 feet tall (pictured above left)and as for my favourite cactus – I'm actually getting a bit worried.

I bought it from a garden centre less than five years ago, when it was about four inches tall. Now it towers over me, and I'm really not sure what to do when it hits the roof. It's already in the conservatory, which is the tallest room in the house. Short of digging a pit for it, or cutting a hole in the roof, I have no idea what the solution is!

As a brunetteWork has been fun as always recently – did you spot me on telly as a brunette? I was doing a beauty show which featured a couple of pieces from Hairdo (mine was the feather cut wig, item 400094).

It was so much fun to instantly change my look, although it did slightly freak me out as I looked very similar to how I looked as a teenager, when I still had my natural very dark brown hair. Because yes, amazingly, I'm not actually a natural blonde!

My flight is about to be called, but before I hop on a plane and fly back to London, here is a quick peek at the most fabulous Today's Special Value offer from Gatineau, coming up on QVC on Sunday 6th.

The upcoming Gatineau TSVIt's a brilliant four piece Renew and Reveal Collection. It contains my absolute favourite, can't live without, eye make-up remover Floracil, plus the brilliant Renew 7 Laser which transforms the appearance of your skin in just seven days.

I'm using it daily in the run-up to Sunday – I'll be on air with the Gatineau team at 4pm!

Have a wonderful week. Please get in touch – I always love to hear from you, so either leave a comment below this blog or say hello on Twitter (I'm @jackiekabler).

    Hi Jackie,
Glad you had a great time in New York
Yes I can imagine visiting the 9/11 Memorial would be very moving, that was such a terrible thing to happen wasn’t it, you cannot imagine what people went through.
With regard to your plants, have you been feeding them Richard Jacksons Flower Power. Maybe he will have an idea as to what to do with them.
Yes I did like the wig you were wearing it seemed to give you more colour it really suited you.
Will look out for the Gatineau TSV, I love their products.
I had to laugh at what your Mum said about you on the Farmers Market Show, she has a good sense of humour.
    Take care.

    Hi Jackie,
I always love reading about your exploits and travels. New York is my second favourite city after London. I’ve been there twice and particularly on my last visit back in 2000, I was struck by the absolute friendliness and helpfulness of New Yorkers plus (at the time) it seemed so much cleaner than London. I was born in London and never fail to get excited being on a train going over the River Thames (I’m in my mid-40s but a kid at heart!!). If I ever get the chance to visit again, I will certainly visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum – thank you for mentioning it in your blog as I wasn’t aware of its’ existence.
Your description of your house plants had me chuckling(!) and last but not least, I thought the dark brown gave your face a warmth. It did suit you. As someone with brown hair, perhaps I am biased!
    All the very best,
    Beth XX

    Hi Beth
Yes if you go back to New York you really must go to the 9/11 Memorial, it’s so worth seeing. I agree with what you say, New York is very friendly and very clean!

    Hi Julie
Sorry no, that was me off-duty so wearing a non QVC item (although I do wear a lot of the brands we sell when I’m outside work too!). That top is one I picked up in Spain.

    Hi Jackie,
I don’t do twitter or facebook, no idea about such things, have tried the odd text to QVC but it never seems to get through so thought I’d try this!! I used to watch you on ITV, I think you fit in so very well at QVC and really enjoy your shows.

    Hi Maggie
Oh that is so kind of you, thank you! Yes I know not everybody does Twitter or Facebook (I don’t do Facebook at all) so it’s nice that we can chat to people on our blogs as well. I absolutely love QVC – it’s so very different from my previous jobs in news but I enjoy it so much. It is, however, turning me into a serious shopping addict – temptation on every show! Thanks so much for getting in touch and hope to chat again soon.
    Love Jackie x
