A sneak peek at the Christmas promo!

Serving up Christmas dinner Hi there!

You may not thank me for reminding you but the days are getting shorter, autumn is well on its way and this weekend sees our early-bird Christmas shopping event, with Sunday 25th marking just three months until we tuck into turkey and Christmas pud. (If you join us over the weekend I believe you WILL thank me, when you see what we have to offer you!)

Lunch on the set On set The team set up the tree

You may have spotted our promo advert for the event, featuring Simon, Dale, Claire and myself ‘helping’ a family prepare for and enjoy their festive day. I took a day out from QVC Towers last week to help make this, and had a fun day in a gorgeous house in Wandsworth, pretending it was Christmas. (And that it was my home – I wish…!)

Simon was wrapping presents while Dale decorated the tree (well, added the finishing touches) and Claire helped model Alla, our ‘mum’ to choose her jewellery. I was in the kitchen serving up the Christmas turkey (it was the largest chicken we could find!) to my pretend family, Alla with her pretend husband Steve and son Dylan, who were all models and not related.

It was like a mini film set and I’ve added some photos here to give you an idea of what it was like behind the scenes. It took all day to film what has ended up as about 30 seconds of footage to get you in the festive mood for the weekend. Our promotions team is second to none and the videos that they produce for the breaks between our shows are, I’m sure you’ll agree, inspirational. They could hold their own with the best of the BBC or advertising shoots in terms of professionalism and creativity, and I always enjoy being involved with one of their shoots, as some variety to my regular appearances on QVC.

For a start, I was treated to a makeover from a professional hair and make-up artist, whereas what you normally see is all my own work. And it makes a change to be able to repeat something until we get it absolutely spot on, rather than the first take which is what you get with live TV. Having said that, by the time I’d carried a huge plate of food to the table several times, and we’d endlessly chinked glasses for our festive ‘cheers’ while only pretending to sip the bubbly (cheapest Cava we could find!) I was ready to down the lot in one!

I’m not sure whether it made me feel pleased or panicked that Christmas is on its way again. I always enjoy the season, but there is so much to do in the run up to the day itself, and then it’s over so quickly. I know that I’m cooking for about 14 people this year, so I must make sure I’m well organised beforehand. And that includes present buying too – whenever I leave it until the last minute I always end up spending far more than I intended, or can really afford. That’s what this weekend’s Early Bird Christmas shopping is all about – helping you to get ahead so you enjoy Christmas without breaking the bank or getting stressed by what should be a happy time.  Maybe you have loved ones abroad who you need to buy early for, or maybe you’re one of those mega-organised people who put me to shame. Whichever, I hope you find what you’re looking for on QVC this weekend.

    Hi Kathy
So lovely to seeing you blog againx Ali K told me she had passed on my compliment to you re you really suiting the recent Denis Basso TSV – you really suited the style and looked very sleek and beautiful(you are very photogenicx),i also really love your hair when youv’e “Yogied” it(making it curly). Wasn’t it a great achievment for David Walliams to complete his marathon swim? I also watched a Channel Five programme last week with some of their presenters along with Pamela Stephenson and Ronan Keating and some professional swimmers doing something similar – bravo to them allx I know you were one of our athletes in your earlier years – was swimming your forte? Love watching you on QVC,keep up the good workx Look after yourself Love Linda,Glasgow

    Hi Kathy
A few days ago (on the morning programme I think) I saw you demonstrate a steam mop which you said is the one you use yourself at home… can you tell me which one it is? I can’t seem to find the right one on-line! Thanks so much, Catherine

Hi Janice. Thanks for your kind words – I’m halfway thru my next blog (amazing – 3 in as many weeks!!) but thought I should answer you here first – only just noticed that people have been kind enough to comment. I don’t know where the time goes, but I rarely seem to sit down to blog but I’m really going to make an effort now I’ve started again. I’m waiting for Billy to finish his snowboarding lesson at the indoor snow centre in Hemel Hempstead at the moment, and they have wireless in the viewing cafe, so I can write this as I watch him perfect his twists and jumps. Watch out for my next entry!
    Best wishes

    Hi Catherine
The steam mop I use at home is the shark, item number 830618. It’s pricey at £80 but I really like it and it does the job well. We have a big kitchen/conservatory with a laminate floor and it is just what i needs. Also for the bathroom and loo floors. I also have the it works microfibre mop, 828528, which is great for quick cleanups.
I hope this helps – the other steam mop I like is the monster, 829663, but we don’t have it in stock at the moment.

    Hi Kathy,
I just wanted to say I hope you and your amazing buddies – Debs, Claire and Ali have a wonderful night at the BCC ball!! You will all be knockouts! You’re such a lovely bunch and clearly are a rock for each other through your own personal trials. So inspirational. Lucky ladies to have each other but you all deserve each other too! Can’t wait to hear all!

    Hi Linda
Thanks Linda. Yes, Ali did mention your compliments, but I’d already enjoyed them on her blog – thanks very much! Ali came to stay last week and we enjoyed a lovely walk in the woods with my dog Barney, and then I made up a recipe with trout fillets, pistachios, olives and pesto for tea, which turned out better than I’d hoped. Then we had baked peaches with maple syrup and creme fraiche – which un-did all the good our walk had done! We had a lovely time and an opportunity for a good chat – something that’s all too rare.
And yes, David Walliams’ feat was remarkable, as was the Irish sea swim the others did. I rather fancy tackling the arctic as in the extreme game show that’s on TV at the moment, but I fear it would be a case of the mind is willing but severely let down by the body! You’re right, though. Swimming was my first sport, and it led to modern pentathlon where it’s is one of five event – the others are running, shooting, fencing and horse riding. Long time ago now, though!
    Take care

Susan – let me quickly say that we had the most amazing night, largely because Ali gave a monster speech that had everyone in the Great Hall at the Grosvenor House Hotel (over 1000 people) laughing and then crying and finally on their feet giving her a deafening standing ovation. She was (and is) incredible. I’m dashing out to walk the dao before it gets too dark, but you’ll see and hear more on Wednesday at 7pm for our BCC event, and I’ll try to get something on my blog with a picture of Ali. She looked beautiful…

    Hi Nikki
That’s a good point, as I often find boots are too tight on my ‘healthy’ sized legs. I will try to have a tape measure when I’m next showing you shoes and boots, and will suggest it to our production team as well. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks very much, Wilma. I’m glad you look forward to the morning show – I really enjoy presenting it. Tuesday to Friday at 9am are my regular slots, so I look forward to your company. And do have a go at our daily competition – you could win £50 of QVC credits and it costs nothing to enter!
    Take care

    Hi Susan.
Don’t tell me – he once got taken down the slope on a body board when he slipped on an icy patch on a jump and landed flat on his back. And his other sport is rugby so I find I’m constantly holding my breath!
The worst moment was when Bex needed an air ambulance after coming off her horse and landing on her head. She was concussed but very luckily no lasting damage – she was back up on her horse the next day.
I’m not sure where I went wrong with them – what’s the matter with origami and tiddly winks?!

Lol Kathy, you’re hilarious!!! Just goes to prove those kids have inherited your sense of sport!!! Good for them! I cannot imagine what it must be like to have to see the air ambulance for your own. It sends chills when I watch the BBC show Helicopter Heroes!
Going to read your new blog now. Cannot wait to see your buds Debs and Ali tomorrow!
    Take care
