How do you enter the comp to win over £170 worth of Red Carpet long-lasting Gel Manicure goodies? And what was my very first opera like? Read on…
OK, so the first little section this week is kind of a tale of two halves – quite literally, in the case of my trip to the Royal Opera House on Monday. It was my first ever experience of live opera – so a worthy TiFFT – a ‘Try it For The First Time’ club event for February.
Quite a cultured experience it was, with all the wonderful pomp and ceremony that’s inevitably involved in any event at the grand old Royal Opera House near Covent Garden. Everyone in their Sunday Best – a ‘refined’ experience indeed, eg.. ahem .. £12 per glass for champagne!
Let alone dining in the amazing Paul Hamlyn Hall Balconies Restaurant. Well turns out these operas – often all in Italian or German or in this case, Russian – are nowadays made more accessible because amazingly, did you know they actually show subtitles – a bit like they are on the telly?
Only in this case, they’re displayed ABOVE the action – on a screen at the top of the stage – hence they’re called ‘sur-titles’. So, I was reassured that I didn’t need a crash course in Russian to enjoy it.
I duly sat in anticipation, fascination and expectation. Then all at once the band finished tuning, struck up, and the curtains drew back. There we were back in 19th century Russia listening to Tchaikovsky’s tale of a letter to a lost love, and a life you can’t relive. See here for more info about the story (Click here) Thing was – the vital surtitles didn’t work!
So the whole of the first half was spent in total frustration! You ever felt that feeling where you didn’t get picked for the team? Or everyone around you has done the homework, but you were away the day they did the lesson and didn’t know any of it? Well at that point, I felt just like I was back in Mr Saunders’ maths class, aged 11, doing quadratic equations. Initially, I just didn’t get it. Despite the précis in the programme. (Thank god for it, actually, so at least I knew roughly what the plot was.)
But as each scene was endlessly sung and tirelessly emoted by the marvellous performers – I just couldn’t understand a blimmin word! I guess that’s the way it used to be all the time – no translation or nuffink . But not nowadays – normally. I could have cried!
The sudden appearance of the English phrases above the action, keeping yours truly informed of every betrayal, duel, confession and refusal meant that all became clear! Hooray!!! It was night and day compared to the first half. So yes, I enjoyed it, and yes I would go again.
BUT soooo expensive for tickets – do they say opera is only for the few? That may be why. Do you go? Have you ever been? If you are curious, guess what – you might be able to find the special showings of the ‘live cinema relay’ of ROH’s Eugene Onegin in an Odeon near you! Epsom have it on 20th Feb, for example. Check it out!
Meanwhile here’s a little taster of what it was all about for me – literally – (when you watch it you’ll know why!) hehe!
So if I go again, to another show, what would you recommend? Those of you that know opera? Leave me a comment below and tell me – add ‘red carpet’ to the comment and you’ll also be entered in this week’s competition!

Also, don’t know if you noticed, but the Skechers show on Sunday night was full of wider styles!
Yes, Lisa Hickerton our lovely buyer tells me there are wider shoes and boots also available now in Clarks and in Hotters – search these three brands online.
This week’s Wide Feet Focus is the pair of Skechers I fell in love with that night and bought two colours – sooo comfy! 106248 (click here)
Do give them a go – many are wider.
And let me know if you’ve found any little gems on our website you’re thrilled with, if you’re similarly ‘hobbit foot’ed like me! And note there are loads of Skechers on ‘last clicks’ pricing on our website!
Thanks to everyone who lobbied, along with me, to bring in wider styles for wider feet.
Now we need to make sure we buy them regularly so they know there’s a demand, and Lisa says we may be able to gain a whole hour specifically for wider feet, on the scheduling!
Otherwise how about these mary jane style ones 102458 – (Click here) – my wide size 7 and half (normally need 8) fit into a size 7 in these ! Yay!
Now time for another little blooper from the last week or so and it’s the turn of Bibi Bijoux’s Maxine, who embarrasses herself with a little too much information about her personal life, on her jewellery show last week!
– Behind the scenes – FM initiation number 2! Another little highlight from last week, and this time it’s FM Laura who was enlisted to appear on air, and help me show the nifty Slim-Be weight loss drink! How game she was, bless her! (I won’t tell you what they were saying in her ear to put her off but I’m sure you can imagine!)
- Will and Charlie’s first date secrets! Loved the little bit of sharing Will did, during the Charlie Bears TSV bargain on Tuesday night! Here it is again if you missed it – who says romance is dead?! Lol. What would your own reaction have been to that suggestion for a first date? Leave me a comment below!
It’s another one that sooo needs a caption!
Had so many compliments when wearing this lovely stretch lacy pencil skirt at the weekend
As an archaeology geek, I find this colourful gemstone made of ancient fossilized ammonites fascinating!
He’s back May 4th, I believe – can’t wait!
But – Closing date is this weekend – 15/16 Feb. Take a closer look at it by clicking on it to expand, then respond sharpish, if you’ve ever fancied being on the telly!
It’s with Objective Productions – the same company that created my game show, Meet The Challenge, which I hosted in 1998. Good luck!
This cute pic is for those that wonder about my four errant hounds and their antics. This week, Daisy and Gracie the choccie labs decided to ‘make like Steve McQueen and James Garner’ once more – with another Great Escape!
Yes, the Labrador sisters were off taking themselves for a walk again around the nearby woods. Hence the newly acquired scratches on my poor hands after wiring up the holes in the fence – Grrrr!
They’d never get up to such mischief if they were still little, like these cuddly pups! If only, eh!
WATCH – ooo some lovely films this week! Had a double whammy – Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins in the superbly acted ‘Hitchcock’ – the biopic covering the filming of his most successful movie, ‘Psycho’, and Hitch’s obsession with his leading lady (Scarlett Johanssen). So touching, the relationship between the two leads, plus the period details were gobsmacking. Well worthy of an impressive 8.25 out of ten.
Remember I asked you last week what should I see out of that and ‘This Is 40’? Well I couldn’t choose so I saw the latter as well – same night! Lol! Anything with Paul Rudd in is all right by me, and Leslie Mann – wife of the successful director of the movie, Judd Apatow – was superb. Special mention to the two kids too – Apatow and Mann’s offspring! Ones to watch for the future for sure. And some other of my faves – Jason Segal and Chris O Dowd to name but two – were also stellar.
Do go if you love quirky, coarse, true to life comedies. Don’t go if you are about 40 and have real relationship doldrums – unless you’re prepared to stay till the ending with its predictably happy but welcome outcome.
I give it 8.5, a little higher than Hitch ‘cos of the funny, funny script. Well done Judd – now officially my favourite director! You’ll maybe recall I featured Knocked Up on DVD a few weeks back? Well this is his ‘kind of sequel’ about mid-life crisis in suburbia. Do catch both if you can!
– You’re getting adventurous now, and requesting your own sneaky peeks from me!
