A new season and reasons to be cheerful

I’m writing this on a train, travelling from Dublin to the west of Ireland on a quick visit to my mum’s. It’s the day of the autumn equinox and, coincidentally, this is the first day in ages that I’ve felt a little chilly and put a jacket on.

The new season is officially here, and while lots of people seem a little sad that summer and long bright evenings are over, I actually don’t mind. I love the changing seasons (I would hate to live somewhere with year-round sunshine!) and there are so many reasons to be cheerful at this time of year.

As I’m passing the time on this train, I thought I’d make a list of my top five autumn/winter loves and share it with you; and I’d love to hear your reasons to be cheerful too, so please leave me a message at the end of this blog!

I much prefer winter clothes to summer ones.

I love snuggling up in jumpers, boots and faux fur coats. I love pub lunches in front of blazing log fires. I love walking along the canal on a cold, crisp morning.

I’ve already treated myself to a gorgeous new winter coat in anticipation, pictured on the left, from Rino & Pelle. And then, of course, there’s the joy of Cozee Home bedding.

I devoted the whole of my last blog to that though, so I won’t harp on about it again here!

footloose-the-musicalGoing to the theatre

Although summer is great for outdoor activities, there is so much we can find to do indoors when the weather gets colder; like going to the theatre.

Last week, I went with my niece to the Everyman theatre in Cheltenham to see ‘Footloose – The Musical’, starring Gareth Gates.

It was brilliant, and took me right back to my youth when my friends and I were obsessed with the ‘Footloose’ movie. I really need to go to the theatre more often, and this time of year is perfect for it.

I don’t eat porridge during the summer, but it’s a perfect cold weather breakfast, especially with a banana and some berries added.

I really enjoy my first porridge of the year… I might wait until October though, so it’s a bit colder! And soup too.

I’m a truly dreadful cook, but even I can rustle up a decent soup in my Cooks Essentials soup maker.

I just love Christmas, and the build-up to it, which at QVC has already started, with our monthly Christmas days. So much fun!

I’m working over Christmas this year, but I’ll still find time to enjoy it.

This may sound a little odd, but winter is my time to re-group, look back on the past year and start looking ahead to the next.

That could be planning anything really, from places I’d like to visit next year to what plants I want in the garden. I know we can’t always plan, as life has a habit of throwing unexpected things at us, but I like to try.

I also do a big wardrobe sort-out too – in fact, I’m going to do that in October. Always nice to enter a new season with an organised closet!

If you really want to hold on to summer though, I recommend the fabulous 10 piece Summer Shower Gel Collection from Philosophy. I am gradually working my way through this and it really has some of the most gorgeous, true-to-life fragrances. I love foodie and fruity aromas (in both candles, like Yankee Candle, and bath products) and these are divine – if you like the sound of Raspberry Sorbet, Vanilla Coconut or Passion Fruit Daiquiri, you will love this selection.

So I’m starting the new season with a positive attitude and a sense of excitement. Who knows what it will bring us all?

I hope it’s a good one, for everyone.

Love Jackie xx

Enjoy your visit with your mum. As we entet autumn and winter I look forward to my soups, stews and baking with my grandaughter. I also love porridge only wish I could make it like my dad used to make for us. Knitting is something that helps me through the winter making cardigans for my friends grandchildren. Like you Jackie I love my cozze home bedding, no sheet shock when you get into bed. You take care x

Where in the west of Ireland does your mum live, Jackie? I am (at least originally) American but I went to university in Galway many many many years ago (quite an odd thing to do at the time!) and it is still my favourite place on earth. I fully intend on moving there when I retire (IF that day EVER comes!). I also like Mayo and Kerry and prefer the west to the east but maybe that is just because I know it better. You didn’t grow up in Ireland, did you?

      Hi Eileen,
Mum lives in Leitrim. My niece went to university in Galway and absolutely loved it too! Yes I spent thirteen years living in Ireland (both parents are Irish) from when I was nine until 22 – I lived in Leitrim, then Sligo and then university in Dublin. Still go back as often as I can as all my family live there!

Hi Jackie, what a wonderful and uplifting blog. I love hearing from you as you’re always so chipper and normal! I will take note of your wise words. I’m sad to lose summer but like you I love the seasons too x

      Hi Susan
I think life is too short to moan about the weather…after all, as somebody once said, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes! We can’t change the seasons, just as we can’t change our age, so we might as well embrace it and look for reasons to be happy. Let’s have a fabulous autumn! Thanks so much for getting in touch.
      Love Jackie x
