A mini brainteaser

I know it's nearly the weekend – my first weekend completely off for ages! And my I'm in the middle of preparing my next blog about exciting new author Clare Jacob – watch out for the competition too.

But my brother Derek (yes, Derek Flint as in film character 'Our Man Flint' – also as in my dad!) is fond of sending brainteasers like this – and as it was a particularly good one I thought I'd sneak it in as a little extra this week!

This may be a 'little' difficult for all who are over 60. Those younger than this will have no hope at all!

Mensa Quiz

First question:
You are a participant in a race. You overtake the second person.
What position are you in

If you answered that you are first then you are absolutely wrong!
If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are in second place!
Try to better next time!
Second question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are…?

If you answered that you're second to last, then you're… wrong again!
Tell me sunshine, how can you overtake the last person??
You're not very good at this, are you?
Third question:
Very tricky arithmetic! Note: this must be done in your head only, do not use paper and pencil or a calculator.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000, add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?
Did you get 5000?

The correct answer is actually 4100…

If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator.
Today is definitely not your day, is it?

Maybe you'll get this last questiion right… maybe…

Fourth question:
Mary's father has five daughters:
1. Nana
2. Nene
3. Nini
4. Nono
What is the name of the fifth daugther?

Did you answer Nunu? Of course it isn't – her name is Mary! Read the question again!

OK, now the bonus round (ie. a final chance to redeem yourself):

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush.
By imitiating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeperand the purchase is made.
Next, a blind man comes into the shop and wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does he indicate what he wants?

It's really simple – he opens his mouth and asks for them…

Does your employer actually pay you to think?? If so, don't let them see your answers to this test!!

Pass this on to frustrate the smart people in your life!

Have a nice day one and all!

Debs, your getting distracted again !!
    Anyway, got 1,3 and 5 wrong , 2 and 4 right.
Interestingly on 3, although i got it wrong the first time using the wood between my ears, then used a calculator to get it right, cannot get it ‘wrong’ again using my head only right (i.e cannot work out why i got wrong in the first place). Strange !
Guess your still a MENSA member so got them all right ?
    Enjoy your weekend, Nige :-)

    HI debs,
Spooky night continued, well today i was reading my local paper when i turned to the back and ending up looking at the deaths that had happened last week, well imagine the shock i had when i saw that a lovely lady Alice who was now 96 had died last week now this lady had lived at the farm we bought 1994 for over sixty years with her husband.
Now when her husband passed away she moved to the local town but people had said she never got over leaving the farm and she wouldn’t visit again because it was to upsetting for her.
I just wonder if she was involved with my spooky night, we have re-bulit most of the farm, but our bedroom remains the same!!
    What do you think!!
Going for a nice glass of wine now
    Take care

Rubbish at the mensa challenge. Love your blogs always interesting. Most of the other presenters don’t seem to write on their blogs.

Hi Debbie, Im just watching the show for Clarks shoes and agree with your last comment. As I have got older my feet have spread and I have to have wider fit shoes I also take a size 8. It would be lovely to have some wider fit shoes to choose from.

Hi Debbie, Brilliant Clarks show yesterday. I didn’t buy anything because I was too slow or I dithered because like you I have wide feet. I have ordered so many shoes from QVC only to send them back because they are too narrow. I applaud you for trying on so many shoes when you have “difficult” feet like so many of us out here. You couldn’t have done more. Your explanation on all the shoes was so thorough, buying at a high street shop would not have explained half as much. A big. big thank you (I’m still shoeless though!)

    Hi Debs,
Have just watched Clarks shoe sale and as instructed I am sending you my shoe size. I am a 7 E or 6 1/2 EE and have a real problem finding fashionable footwear. At 56 I can no longer wear anything too high but still want something that looks pretty and dainty. Also calf widths are a problem. I am 15 1/2″ to 16″.
Hope QVC listens to you Debs!
