A great time for gardening

Claire Austin Yellow PeonyHi everyone,

It’s a great time in the garden. Day by day, the plants are bursting into growth. I especially enjoy the early beauty of my Claire Austin peonies; the stunning red shoots seem to grow a centimetre or two every day!

You can tell that it has been a mild winter. I was clearing a bed on Sunday and some of last year’s petunia plants (that should have been dug out in the autumn!) were sprouting into life. Hopefully, my over-wintering dahlias, which I deliberately left in the ground, will also be fine.

Richard Jackson's slug pellets

I’ll find out soon, but I know that the first young shoots are much loved by slugs and snails so I’ve started to sprinkle my special slug pellets around them as a precaution.

I’ve not heated the greenhouse this winter but I’m just going to start as I’ll be getting my tomato plug plants soon and they’ll need the gentle heat. I’m also going to plant up some pots too and a few weeks in the greenhouse will speed them into early flower.

Richard Jackson's Flower Power plant food

I’ll be feeding them with Flower Power too to give them a kick start. Talking of Flower Power, we’ve teamed up with The Sun newspaper to run a fantastic competition which launches on Saturday 5th April. I’ll tell you more in the 9am gardening show on that day.

The other news is that my two sons, Chris and Nick, have both passed the QVC guest audition so you’ll be seeing both of them on air soon. They’ll be launching an exciting new product and it’s nothing to do with gardening! Charlie Brook and Chloe have kindly offered to test the product pre-launch. I’ll reveal more details in my next blog!

Happy gardening,

Richard
