It’s been a big few weeks for my daughter Bex. She has completed her medical degree and is now officially Dr Rebecca Olley IBSc (Hons) MBBS!
We had the excitement of attending her Graduation Ceremony this week, which was held at the Royal Festival Hall on Southbank in London. It was an inspiring and moving occasion with almost 350 young doctors acknowledged as being part of the future of medicine in this country and abroad, having studied at University College London and in several London hospitals for the last six years. They each had a few seconds of their own as they crossed the stage to the applause of the audience – I managed to catch the moment on my phone!
It’s hard to believe that student life is now over for Bex – it seems to have been almost endless! But come the end of July she will be on the hospital wards as a junior doctor. She’s very excited and totally ready for the next stage of her life as a professional medic, but there’s great news in her personal life too.
Her lovely boyfriend Dan proposed to her a couple of weeks ago (after a phone call to Olley to ask for her hand in marriage) and they’ve already set the date for the weekend before Christmas. “Why hang around when you know it’s what you want to do?” says the ever-practical bride-to-be. So there’ll be lots of planning, decision making and list writing in the coming weeks!
They are so happy together and haven’t stopped grinning since Dan put a beautiful solitaire diamond ring in romantic rose gold on Rebecca’s finger. All you really want for your children is for them to find happiness. For Bex, at the moment, I couldn’t hope for more.
I hope the sun is shining on you, too.
