In the Mix 96 - Charlie Brook mix tape

90’s chart hits, my first computer and time with Tova!

Another week has raced by at QVC and some wonderful shows I’ve been fortunate to present as well. I hadn’t been on air with Tova for so long I was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen again! Well, just when I had all but given up hope I was lucky enough to be on air with her once more. Tova’s fragrances are truly divine as is her range of Diamonique. I hope I’ll be in her company again in the not too distant future.

Speaking of time, I often write how it seems to be racing by these days… For example, this year for me celebrates 20 years since mixing the ‘In The Mix’ album series for Virgin Records. It is without question, a career highlight for me. I’ll never forget heading into Woolworths with my mum to show her the album, she was so proud. ‘In the Mix 96′ was the first of the series, but I was fortunate enough to mix and produce many more.

My favourite being ‘In the Mix 90s Hits’. They were amazing times and we were always working to a tight deadline which began on a Friday afternoon, mixing the tracks throughout the weekend, to be mastered first thing Monday morning.

Speaking of years ago… Do you remember these? Weebles! I came across them in our cupboard under the stairs. Do you also remember the TV jingle? Weebles Wobble but they don’t fall down! Brilliant!

Weeble toys

Looking back I wish I kept some of my toys from my childhood. A real favourite of mine was the Fisher Price garage which had a lift and it’s very own pretend petrol pump as well. I also loved my Fisher Price record player too. I was lucky enough to receive a drum one birthday… I was hoping to upgrade to an entire drum kit but that never materialised… I can’t imagine why!

In my teens I received my very first computer a Sinclair Spectrum, and I still have it to this day; although it hasn’t been plugged in for at least 25 years. Some of the top games to own at the time were Hungry Horrace or Horace Goes Skiing! The games were on cassette tape!

A friend of mine owned a Sinclair Spectrum model which had the cassette deck built into the key board! I wonder where technology will be in another 25 years’ time?

What was your favourite classic toy?

See you soon and have a great week.

And remember… those Weebles wobble… but they don’t fall down!

I still have my Spectrum with all the tapes in its special carry case that we had to order from WH Smiths and took ages to arrive. The only thing that did not fit in the case was the Joy Stick.

I loved weebles!! Although they do look somewhat scarier than I recall. I had the weeble cars too. Plus the garage and record player.. and the magically moving wind up ‘tv’ screen that played one ‘tune’,.i also remember sitting for hours loading and reloading the zx spectrum cassettes as they would finally finish with an error message! How times have changed…my 17yr old daughter had great delight looking at my vinyl picture disc collection from the 80s!!

Hi Beverley, you’ve brought back so many memories!

I had the TV too! I can’t remember the tune it played though?

    Brilliant times!

    All the best

    Hi Charlie,

I have all the ‘in the mix’ series on cd, these were by far the best mixed cd’s at that time… nothing came close. I also notice you were a mix engineer on some other albums for ministry of sound and pete tong compilations. These got me into DJing back then and still listen to them today.

Did you also do the mix for radio 1 around that time for mark goodiers drive time??

Would be greatful if you could provide a list of all cd’s you mixed or were an engineer on so i can add to my collection.

    Kind regards,
