A wonderful weekend

4

Well what a weekend I had! I was fortunate enough to repeat one of the best experiences of last year when on Saturday night, at the plough arts Centre in Torrington, I sang once again with a fabulous jazz band.

The Eric Gilchrist Trio played with me last November at a special annual charity event at a church in Chiswick. Once again this time it was for the charity, Medical Detection Dogs getting the benefit of both that event and also the following day when we had a fabulous pop-up vintage tea rooms at my guest house in Sheepwash.

It was almost a full house, given that one very special donor called Nigel had paid for lots of tickets and allow them to be filled by the public, thank you, Nigel! And having had only a couple of rehearsals in London, it all went off rather smoothly. The band played, then I sang, and a special guest, Barry Parsons, a well-known local figure and ex-West End singer also sang songs from the musicals.

I just love 40s like jazz songs such as ‘Beyond the Sea’, ‘That old Devil Love’, ‘What a Difference a Day Makes’, and ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’, and I was lucky enough to sing all four of those, together with a couple of others.

The biggest show-stopper and most enjoyable one for me was a song from my favourite musical ever, City of Angels. Heard of it? It’s not one of the most well-known ones but I love the soundtrack so much I have been singing to it for years.

My kids endured the songs over and over while they were growing up on countless car journeys, haha. So I also sang You Can Always Count on Me. That and others will be on my official Facebook page here, and on my website newsletter when I get the chance to upload them!

I’ve always wanted to be in that musical, and years ago I would have loved to have played one of the main two roles. Now I think I would have to play the mother, lol. Nevertheless, it went down a storm, and the second-half also included I can Dream Can’t I which was covered by The Carpenters but is an old wartime classic. Here’s a sample.

All in all a lot of fun was had. And I’m so glad I took part. It was hard work though and I was very nervous. Stressed out beyond belief is another way of putting it!!

My lovely friend Sheena helped with the organisation and I could not have done it without her, and my lovely Lauren and her new hubby Nick also came along and enjoyed the weekend acting like guests and staying with me. It made a change because every single other time they have been down they been working hard helping me do jobs around the house! So I looked after them for a change.

Which meant getting up on Saturday and Sunday and cooking a full breakfast for them and the band. Then on Sunday, everyone left and we had the vintage tea rooms. That was a full on day as well. But another success, in fact, we were the busiest we had ever been in all the ones I’ve done so far. Hopefully, that bodes well for the future. Lots of delicious cake was eaten, Tea was drunk, and a very successful event it was. Then I needed to sleep haha. Nearly had a migraine on Monday though – I don’t do things by halves do I!! AT least I had a yoga week with two sessions nearly every day and it really helped me unwind. Must keep doing that now – it makes my body feel so good!

Facebook funny – this tickled me! Dan the fish man at Hatherleigh market has his name ALL OVER his stall – and numpty here didn’t even notice…! He he.. After feeling a bit zonked on Monday when I nearly had a migraine and fought off sickness after overdoing it this month, The effects were still wearing off the next day. No wonder at my regular Tuesday morning get-together and shopping expedition with my friend Alix, this happened… Oh well he saw the funny side and so did we.

Blooper

Funny dancing from Richard Jackson!

Watch – another superb film in the cinema at the moment – Victoria and Abdul, featuring the stellar Judi Dench. She is magnificent in this role, reprising her version of Queen Victoria, but in the last years of her life when she became captivated by Abdul – an Indian servant who brought some joy to her lonely later years. Do go see it – a good 8 from me.

Another ‘Watch’ – Go see The Apprentice, You’re Fired being recorded – I love this show. Lost in TV are again offering free tickets to the spin-off show – I hope to make it at some point in the series, but as you may know, I usually go down to Devon on Mondays each week. Looking forward to it though. Some of the successful ones end up on QVC – like Tom Pellereau and his Stylefile range of nail products. And of course lovely Saira and her super skincare range.

And who can forget Naomi the lady who used to do footwear and who did so well on the shopping channel challenge in one of the early series? (Was that her name?) You never know – maybe this year’s success stories will end up on QVC too!

This week on QVC – Today’s special value is this Archos smart phone for under £80 – go here to buy yours.

Saturday’s is a new pair of Skechers suede boot with faux fur lining – perfect as the nights draw in.

Then Sunday’s is the brilliant Lakeland heated airer – I cannot do without mine considering all the bedding we change each week for guests – it’s great for hiding my own washing away too.

Next week sees Mr Christmas Indoor/Outdoor musical lights on Monday – which is, of course, the 25th. Then on Tuesday, it’s Cuddl Duds Comfort patch cosies. Wednesday is a new beauty tool offer from Beauty Bioscience, then Thursday is the Real Pie Company pack of 12. The Incredibrella (see above) is all day Friday – if stocks last, but I launch it midnight Thursday don’t forget.

Wonderful to listen to one of the old great songs, which I adore. What a beautiful voice you have Debbie, just perfect for those great Jazz/ Blues/ Big Band numbers. They will always be in vogue. Never out of date. Congratulations.
