Baby Calla and he grandad

Baby Bloom

64

I’ve just had my ninth hot flush of the day, the one at lunchtime self-induced as I met my mum and Joe for coffee and cake!  Having just been told that the temperatures in Cyprus are in the high 40’s I’m in search for a REALLY big fan to take…

But never mind me, our gorgeous girl Rae went into labour on the hottest day of the year, yet she was a trooper and safely delivered our second granddaughter into the family!  A huge welcome to baby Calla Lily whom we loved at first sight.  You can see why can’t you?!

Baby Calla

We’d been struggling to know what practical present to buy for mum and dad, but they were both delighted when Colin suggested the Dyson hot cold fan!  It’s worked wonders and helped the little one to sleep through these humid nights.  She is such a good little soul, Rae and Danny have taken to parenting like ducks to water.  We feel truly blessed.

Proud parents of baby calla

Little Honey managed really well without the fan when she came to stay with her mummy on Saturday night.  It was such a lovely day and we had a barbeque and stayed out in the warm evening until it was bathtime.  Then she was back in her special cot for the night, totally exhausted.  The reason for this? Honey is now walking!  I filmed this just as she came out of the bathroom bless her.  She had a mouthful of bread, but it didn’t seem to affect her balance!

She looks more like her mummy everyday with those beautiful curls, and I feel so lucky to be making these memories.  So many of you told me that the love I’d feel for my grandchildren would be extra special, and you are right.  I felt completely fulfilled when bringing my three up, spending special times with them and loving them.  Once they grew up and move away, as they always will, I believed that those feelings had been a gift and were memories to be cherished but not revisited.  I was wrong.  Little Honey makes me feel the way I did when Lucy, Sam and Jack were little, and I know she is in some small way a part of me.  I am so proud to be her Nanny.

Ali and baby Calla

I do want to add, that I’m always aware that many of you don’t have children or grandchildren of your own, but thank you so much for telling me that you enjoy sharing these special moments on the blog, and that they make you smile.  There will be plenty more to come I can promise you.

To those of you who entered the competition we set last week, I hope you were feeling lucky!  It would have been great if we could have had prizes for you all, but I’m delighted to announce that Judith Lennon has won all these beauty goodies! Congratulations!

Competition prize

Of course there are beauty bargains galore to be had in our Back to Beauty School day.  I hope you’ve managed to snap a few up.  I was delighted to have an hour with IT Cosmetics as their Bye Bye Redness has made an enormous difference to the heightened colour in my cheeks, as those of you who saw the on air demonstration will have seen! I hope you spotted my fab toe nail colour, as that is part of the OPI TSV collection!  So summery, and a wonderfully polished finish.  Even my manicurist decided she needed to buy one!

Before I head off to the amazingly arid island that is Cyprus, I wanted to show you my beautiful pots in the garden. Richard Jackson’s Flower Power has surpassed itself and this is the best display I have ever had.  However, we’re away for 10 days, and although I’ve just invested in a self-watering system, I’m a tad worried that they may struggle! I’ll let you know how they get on.

Alis garden

Do keep in touch, and I’m sure I will be able to keep up with you via my Ipad – WiFi permitting. Take good care, and those of you who have been struggling of late, I very much hope that life will turn a corner and you will once more feel the sun on your back.

With my love,

Ali xxx

Hi there Linda, and I’m so glad sharing memories has brought back so many precious ones for you! I am not remotely surprised that you are proud of your grandson – that is some achievement, and it’s wonderful that he has had you throughout his life to support and guide him. We had a lovely holiday thank you, although it’s good to be home. Far cooler too! Take care, love Ali xx

Dear Linda lovely to hear from you, and I’m not remotely surprised you are so proud of your grandson. What a wonderful achievement, and even better that he managed to get to America to work in their sports camps. Marvellous that you’ve been part of his growing up, and have no doubt supported and loved him throughout it all. I’m glad you enjoyed the blog, and yes, we had a great holiday in Cyprus thank you. love, Ali

Hi Ali what a beautiful baby girl. I am sure you are so proud. There is definitely something very special about grandchildren. I have 3 granddaughters 6,3 and 2 weeks .
I was watching you on today and you talked about a lovely verse your daughter had written for you when you were going through your treatment. It brought tears to my eyes. My sister has been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in her bones. I think you are an inspiration. Keep well.

    Hello Dear Ali,
Although I always read your lovely blogs I haven’t replied to the last two as I have been having some personal issues, and I just have to say thank you as the last few lines of this new blog seem to be meant especially for me.

As always I have to say what an absolute darling little Honey is, and now that she is walking you really will need eyes in the back of your head won’t you, and now there is adorable Cala Lily, you certainly have some gorgeous names for your little ones don’t you. I assure you Ali that they will be more than proud to have you for their Nanny.

As you say for those of us who don’t have Grand Babies, it is a joy to be able to share with you.

Have a lovely time in Cyprus and please write soon.

Lots of love to you and Colin,
    Gwen.

My dear Gwen reading between the lines I am sorry to know that life has been difficult for you of late, but I very much hope that they are now improving and you are feeling well and happier. Please do let me know how you are getting on, and I am glad that in the meantime the blog has cheered you and you are enjoying my little granddaughters :) They are beautiful names aren’t they? Both very different, but ones that I am sure both girls will be proud to be known by. Cyprus was great, but incredibly hot! Managed to have some quality time with Keeley though, and I’m back with you and Diamonique tonight at 9pm. Hope to see you then, love Ali xx

    Hi Alison
Congratulations on the birth of your second Granchild and what a beautiful baby who seems to have lots of hair already. I love the video of Honey walking she is such a pretty cute little girl . I remember it well when both of mine and Granchildren took their first steps and how proud I felt and yes the bond
between mother and child and grandchildren is overwhelming especially a daughters children and you having given birth to your
daughter so you feel the Granchildren are also part of you unfortunately I won’t experience what it feels like a son having children as I have told you recently my son got
killed aged 15 in a road traffic accident but I am sure if he had grown up and had a family I would have just loved any of his children just the same.
Wow the temperatures in Cyprus being 40 degrees that would definitely be too hot for me but I know you love the sun and will return to
QVC looking very tanned and lovely. Hope you have a lovely time and enjoy your new Grandaughter and look forward to see further photos. Take care Love Irene

My dear Irene I do indeed remember you writing to me, and I have thought about you just recently, as it is over nine years since my son had his motorbike accident. It must be very hard for you, but I love the way you think constantly of him and how things would have been. I’m sure that he would’ve had children, and you would’ve loved them as you love all your grandchildren. Calla is a beautiful baby, and was born with a great deal of hair which she still has! I am off to visit her later this morning. She has changed so much even in the last two weeks. I saw Honey yesterday, and she is walking everywhere and trying really hard to speak. Cyprus was great, although I will be honest and say is the first time ever he was too much for me. That said I do a lot of swimming, and consequently I am very tanned! You can check that out tonight at 9 PM when I have my Diamonique show. It’s lovely keeping in touch, and I hope that you are enjoying the summer. Love Ali xx

Ooh Fran, thank you for the tip! I will stick mine in the fridge – I love the smell of it too. I melted so many times in Cyprus – think 40 degrees then add another 10 on for the hot flush! The holiday was fab though, love Ali xx

Many congratulations Nanny Ali and Colin – what’s his title? Calla Lily looks beautiful and it’s wonderful to read that you feel truly blessed. The clip of Honey walking is a treat and I assume it’s your reflection we can see. The little shrug you gave her as she appeared is that silent communication that sums up all the love we have for our small people and I still do it now to my two girlies! Ellie’s little cat has been vaccinated and had “that” operation so he has gone to join his sister in the cattery and I’ve decorated our conservatory ready to turn it back to being our dining room. It didn’t take long to do and looks all new and shiny. It’s the perfect alternative to eating on the terrace, in fact the only alternative at present as our weather has disintegrated and I was so cold yesterday evening I’d have welcomed a hot flush or two – mine seem to have abandoned me at present. Cyprus sounds incredibly warm to say the least and you’ll be golden on your return, we go to Sicily on 14th so I’m not looking at weather forecasts until next week. I really hope that Ellie and Dave’s over extended house fiasco has ended by the time we go away, they have been tolerant far beyond the spot where my patience would have evaporated. She’s teaching Year 6 from September so needs to plan for that and it’s very difficult to do anything when everything you own is in various boxes. Finally, your plants look very healthy and the cloud pruned shrub looks fantastic. Have a glorious holiday. Love from Jo x

Hi there Jo, and thank you for your congratulations! Collins title is grandad Bear… For obvious reasons! Calla lily is beautiful, and I’m so looking forward to spending some time with her and her mummy today. You are very astute Jo, that is indeed my reflection you can see and yes I feel a very strong connection with Honey, probably because Lucy has always been more than generous with her time and sharing Honey with me. Glad to know that you got your house back into some form of order, although I’m sorry you are struggling with is far from warm temperatures. That said I do hope that your hot flushes continue to remain in abeyance… Maybe they are over and done with?! I have to say the hot flashes were little more unwell than usual and we are in Cyprus, but the end the sunshine was absolutely fabulous. I’m certain when you go to Sicily the weather will be stunning there too. I agree that any and days have been extraordinarily patient, and I so hope that their house issues will be solved before she has to return to work. I hope you have a wonderful holiday, but do you tune in tonight at nine as I’ll be back with my Diamonique Show. Love Ali xx

Lovely pics and video Ali. Enjoy reading your blogs. Cyprus is our favourite place and go there most years. We stay the airport side of Paphos. We had an unexpected visit in June when they were in the middle of a heat wave 38/40. We coped with it well as there was always an air con room to relax in or a pool to jump in. We are there as usual in September, a lovely time of the year to go. Have a great time and look forward to seeing pictures.

How lovely for you Pat! I have never been to Cyprus before, that was the last place my father visited before you die always years ago. He stayed in Paphos, and had a wonderful holiday. I will have new photos for you next time, love Ali xx

    Hi Alison
I have already replied earlier to your blog and this is an add on . I meant to mention to you that when I was having my hot flushes as you seem to be experiencing no doubt the menopause . I took a non prescriptive tablet
called Magnesium OK one tablet daily and it certainly helped me by having less hot flushes and there is a marvelous book called the
    magic of magnesium and if
you decide to try and buy it
but cannot find it I am willing
to send it to you via QVC . I
    would have welcomed any
help and advice as my hot
flushes were quite unbearable at times. Take care . Love Irene xx

    • Alison Keenan August 11, 2016 at 9:47 am -  Reply

Bless you Irene for thinking of me, and for your empathy regarding the hot flushes! They are unbearable I find on many occasions. Sadly magnesium actually makes hormones like progesterone and oestrogen and both these are what my cancer is receptive to. I would not be allowed to take them sadly, but I’m hoping when I finish taking the Tamoxifen at the end of this month they will slow down and hopefully stop altogether. it’s been a long and very hot five years! I do hope that yours have passed now. Thanks again, love Ali xx

Hi Ali, lovely blog as always. Congrats on the birth of your second granddaughter she is just beautiful and look so content in Colin’s arms.
So sorry to hear about your hot flushes they must be very distressing , I know my sister in law has a vert bad time with them sometimes she is up most of the night with them, and other times she just has to stop what she is doing sit down until they pass.
How lovely seeing Honey walking she is just so grown up for such a little one and has your eyes.
We still have not had any news on our move to Highcliffe, but hope to have news of exchange in the next week or two. It is getting so close to our holiday now that I think moving will be on our return.
Talking of holidays hope you and Colin have a fabulous time in Northern Cyprus. We have been to Cyprus a couple of times and loved it, we have not been to the North that is one for our list.
Your garden look great, our poor garden has been neglected this year with the move but have loads of Richards products ready for our new garden.
Anyway have a great holiday look forward to reading all about it on your return.
    Love Teresa xx

    • Alison Keenan August 11, 2016 at 9:53 am -  Reply

Dear Theresa, it sounds as though there are a great many of us you are striking the hot flushes. Mine seem to be worse than normal because of the medication I take, and as I have a hormone receptor cancer and I am strongly positive to both oestrogen and progesterone, I cannot take anything to help them. Hopefully your sister could try taking magnesium as Irene suggested to me, or Saint John’s wort or black cohash and sage are meant to be good too. All that said, when I’m with the grandchildren as I was yesterday with honey, I just ignore it and just enjoy being with them. I’m keeping everything crossed that you will have news today of Highcliffe and that you will be able to exchange before your holiday. It would be so nice to know you had a moving date even if it is after you come away. Something lovely to look forward to eh? I am sure your new garden will look stunning with all Richard’s fab products. I will have photos and a travelog for you in my new blog next week. Thanks as always for keeping in touch, love Ali x

It’s one place in the world I never get tired of. It feels just like coming home only the weather is better!!!’ We’ve had some alterations made to our bedroom and the whole house is in total chaos. I’m hoping to be sleeping back in my own bed by the weekend and then we can hopefully get back to some sort of normality with a good tidy up. The mess has been well worth it now I see the finished job. I don’t cope well with mess…… Anyway will be thinking of you having fun in Cyprus and look forward to hearing all about it on your return. Hello there Christine, I didn’t realise your granddaughters was so grown-up! I can’t imagine having that grown-up, yet this last year has passed so quickly I’m sure it will happen sooner than I think. It’ll be lovely to have just over a year between Calla and Honey and to see them growing up together. Good times. Well done to you or Fiona, it sounds as though she’s doing sterling work teaching the children to swim. It is such an important thing for them to learn. I’m glad you enjoy the vintage fair. I really enjoy things like that, but haven’t been to Whitley Bay in my life, but having looked at pictures of it, it’s on my tick list! Our holiday was lovely thank you and I will make sure I have lots of pictures to show you next time. Enjoy your week, Love Ali xx

Dear Connie, lovely to hear from you and I wish I had your name! I think it’s fabulous. Izzy is also a lovely name, and I’m sure at 22 months she is a truly adorable little person especially she’s talking now :) thank you for your kind suggestions regarding my hot flushes, but unfortunately there is absolutely nothing I can take because my cancer is a hormone receptor cancer, and feeds off things like oestrogen and progesterone, but thank you for thinking of me :) Take care, love ALi xx

Hi Ali, hope you and your family are all well and congratulations on your second granddaughter, wonderful news. I wrote to you a while ago asking about some earrings you were wearing and you very kindly helped me with them. It was the Diamonique Double Ear Jacket ones, well I finally ordered them and they are so lovely, I also ordered the Links of London Sweetie bracelet which I adore. It was around the time of my Granddaughter Maizy’s 2nd birthday and Honey’s 1st. Hope you had a lovely time sharing that with her. Maizy is now in her big girls bed, I just want to stop the clock ticking because it is such a lovely age and she is so funny. At the end of busy stressful weeks she brings all the sunshine back. You will be doubly busy now with 2 beautiful granddaughters but oh how lovely. Anyway take care and enjoy the rest of the summer, lots of love clare x

Hi dear Claire, what a lovely expression “she brings all the sunshine back”. I know exactly what you mean, having spent yesterday with Honey, who was so pleased to see me and called me Nanna for the first time. She even stayed in her little cot for a while and played her teddies so she seemed to recognise it which was nice. Maizy is such a fab name too, and I am sure that she is a real chatterbox at two years old, and as you say such a sweetheart. I am glad that you were happy with the jewellery and I hope you will be able to join me tonight at 9pm when we have another of my Diamonique shows, where we’ve got a lovely selection of things including some new earrings! love Ali xx

Good evening Ali and many congratulations for your new beautiful baby. She looks a little poppet. So beautiful with her pink bow. I love the thought of you having a cot which has been used by all your babies. We still have the very large crib which has been in the family for years. It used to be on loan to friend’s babies but is now back in the attic. I think it would be good to keep wool or material in now as I think it may be too big for babies these days. You need plenty of room to have it up.
How special to have Honey overnight. The first of many now and the start of her having her own room and own goodies to keep in her bedroom at your place. Lovely for Lucy and Simon to have some time to themselves too. She looks such a darling as the joy they bring is beyond anything else. You are right in so many people don’t have families for one reason or another but it is so good hearing about each other’s family and taking delight in new steps etc. Although I don’t seem to have been on here for a while it is lovely getting your family catch up.
Fab your little trip away was so good and also your jolly with your mum. I have been catching up on your blogs as I feel I have missed so many. We have been to Cyprus a number of times but only at Easter. It will be hot, hot, hot and you will come back even more tanned.
I have been in the Lakes again and am going this weekend for a longer time. The rest of the family are there but I needed to come back this week for work. Out on walks we have found the lanes are full of old fashioned flowers which are stunning to see and remind us of childhood walks.
Annie had very good news- she was offered the genes test for breast and ovarian cancer at the new hospital and after some wait was told she is clear for both. Such great news as I am sure everyone will understand.
I have to also say my tan is as good as yours but mine is from Tan-luxe water. It is super and I can recommend it as looking totally natural.
Well fingers crossed this works and does not end up in the cloud somewhere as my last try did.
I shall now go and catch up on everyone else’s news but send lots of love Jilly xx

Dear Jilly so lovely to hear from you, and take your need to hear such fabulous news for Ali. I completely understand how relieved you must be as a family, and hopefully you will make moving on a great deal easier.thank you for your kind words about Honey, Lucy and Simon. I wondered if you noticed in my little film of Honey walking, the heart you sent to me with the word Hope embroidered on it. I have it hanging on my door :) You’re right about making a little bit of home for her here. I have all the changing mat and everything, plus a few large boxes full of toys Lucy has decanted from her own home. For Honey it’s like having something new each time she comes! Colin and I really must make it up to the Lakes, he’s never been, and its been over 10 years since I was last there. This is a very beautiful time of the year and I very much enjoy walking. So pleased to hear that you have a cracking tan by using Tan-luxe water – I’ve heard great things from it, and will no doubt need to resort to it to maintain my somewhat ginger skin tone! :) do you very much for writing to me, and it’s lovely to keep in touch. My love to you and Annie, Ali xx

Jilly that is so kind. I am feeling quite excited about it all, having just received the manuscript back and seen there are very few changes essentially. Just a few more chapters to complete and we can look at a second draft! I will keep you in touch with my progress. Love Ali xx

His old furniture needs to come out of his room..i need to decorate before hall stairs and landing ate done..by a decorator not me..the carpets down after then a big tidy up before going back to work but with two bedrooms decorated plus hall etc it will have been a productive summer!!

Crikey very sunny would’ve been a productive summer! More like a house makeover! You’re lucky that your children don’t mind you going through all their bits and pieces. Lucy would’ve hated me sorting her things out for her when she was younger! I know you do a cracking job though, so she probably is incredibly grateful not to have to do it yourself! My sister is also obsessed with the Olympics, although I have to be honest and say because we were away when it began I haven’t really got into it. I do know that Britain have one quite a number of medals already so that is great. I hope that when the decorators come in and do you have a new carpets down, you will take a few days off and sit on the beach, and do nothing! If you don’t you’ll go back to work more exhausted than you were before you broke up for the summer holidays! How’s your husbands ale house business going? I imagine there are even more thirsty people during the summer :) Love you, and I have new pictures for you next week in the job. Do hope you can tear yourself away from the Olympics for the Diamonique show at 9pm :) Love Ali xx
