Celebrating at work

It’s official

Flowers from ElemisFirstly, apologies for not writing a blog last Friday but I had a good excuse, it was my 60th birthday, although I kind of feel I’ve had three different celebrations.

The first caught me totally by surprise and was actually the week before my birthday – the last day I was on air at QVC before my holiday. I had already been pleasantly surprised when the Elemis team presented me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers at the end of my Elemis show with Keeley – aren’t they stunning? Gorgeous summer colours.

Fashion on Friday on 3rd June was with Jenny from Together. We had a really enjoyable show and as 6pm approached I was told over our talkback system in my earpiece that Debs Flint was going to walk onto set to ‘tease’ her 7pm show, wearing a Together tunic. I turned to welcome her, and she was pushing a trolley with a huge cake in the shape of a 60. I was totally gobsmacked – if you missed the complete reaction, here it is.

Huge thanks to my friend and colleague, Nat Gray, for organising it, Jo for baking the yummy cake and Debs for agreeing to come in early to help with the surprise.

Saturday was spent last minute shopping for my holiday, picking up my new glasses and gardening. Yes, you read that correctly!

I have been so busy lately with all the book stuff that I hadn’t had a chance to plant my hanging basket and various other containers I like to have dotted around with summer bedding. Daniel and Sophie were incredulous as it meant I didn’t actually start packing my suitcase for our early flight on Sunday morning until past 6pm on Saturday evening!

It was worth it though as a riot of colour greeted me when I drew back the curtains yesterday morning. I guess all the rain in the UK has helped my plants establish but my heart goes out to you if you’ve been caught up in the flooding.

Unsurprisingly, there was no rain in Spain for the whole eleven days I was there – although we did have a couple of cloudy days and it was very gusty at times. The first three days it was just Sophie, Daniel and me, then on Wednesday, Chris, my friend Denise, and her partner, Steve, arrived with two of my friends from QVC, the aforementioned Nat, and Teresa.

L to R - my daughter Sophie, best friend of 30 plus years, Denise, me, Teresa & Natalie, friends from QVC

Wednesday afternoon was a ‘lolling by the pool’ day, but Thursday we went to the nearby Arenal beach in Javea and four of us went jet-ski-ing. The last day of my fifties was spent in part speeding through the waves off the Spanish coast, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. At some point that evening I must have been reminiscing with Denise about a party we went to when we were in The Price Is Right together – I’ll explain in a moment.

Last day in my fifties

My birthday morning dawned a little grey to start with but it very quickly brightened, in more ways than one. It transpired that while I had been dropping off to sleep the previous night, Sophie, Nat and Teresa had been blowing up balloons and pinning up 60th birthday banners and that was what greeted me bright and early on the 10th.

Balloons and a view

Not only that, but Sophie had already been up for a couple of hours making raspberry coulis to go in the bottom of the champagne, so thoughtfully purchased at the airport duty free shop by Denise and Steve. That is what I had been remembering with affection the previous day and Denise had asked Sophie if she would be able to make it. After a quick search on the internet Sophie was all over it. If you’ve never tried it, you should for your next celebration. Just spoon the coulis into the bottom of a champagne flute, top up with fizz and drop in a strawberry – really delicious.

Birthday cards

Next it was cards and pressies – I won’t say too much but thanks to my lovely family and friends for truly thoughtful presents and I can barely wait until October when I’ll be going to watch the awesome Andrea Bocelli – predictably I cried upon opening this present. After an afternoon relaxing, me with Philip Kingsley’s Rhubarb and Elderflower Elasticizer in my hair (pictured below), we got ready to go out for birthday dinner at Satari’s, in Moraira, owned by Slim n Lift guest Janie Renner’s sister and brother in law, Abi.

With Elasticiser

Birthday flowersHe had put up birthday balloons and banners, Steve treated each of us girls to a rose with an extra one for the birthday girl, but possibly my highlight of the evening was Sophie getting up to sing two songs – proud mummy moment. I can honestly say it is one of the happiest birthdays I’ve ever had – thank you to my friends and family for making it so special, I feel very fortunate.

Once the birthday party went home on Sunday, Chris, Daniel and I enjoyed another three days of relaxation, although I have been swimming a lot, before Chris and I headed home on Wednesday evening. Our flight was nicely co-ordinated to allow Daniel to pick up three of his friends for a week’s holiday – I think a lot of watching football (Euro 2016) will be going on. Actually, Dan gave me his John Grisham book, The Litigators, to read once I had finished ‘Me Before You’ by Jojo Moyes. Very different books but both highly enjoyable and I would recommend them.

On the subject of books, I mentioned on my last blog that I was doing an interview on a book show on Marlow FM radio - click here if you fancy a listen – and for any other book news just head over to my webpage www.juliarobertsbooks.co.uk

So, after a fabulous holiday, the fly in the ointment was that our flight back to the UK was delayed by over two hours, meaning we didn’t climb into bed until 3am (4am Spanish time). This had a bit of a knock-on effect as I was due to be going to Ascot yesterday. I dragged myself out of bed, did my hair and make-up, and arrived at around 12.30 but realised virtually straight away that my pounding head wasn’t conducive with wearing a heavy hat for hours so sadly I never went inside the racecourse, deciding it would be best to return home and curl up on the sofa instead.

At least England managed their first victory of Euro 2016, plus I had the pleasure of a second birthday card opening session. Thanks so much to those of you who sent cards (many kindly forwarded by Debs Flint) – if you gave me your address, I’ll drop you a thank you note.

Birthday cards from viewers

Well no Focus on Fashion today, but normal service will be resumed on next week’s blog. I’m back on QVC next Thursday for The Lunchtime Show at 1pm (doing pre-records the rest of the day) and then Friday at 2pm SBC, 4pm Liz Earle and 5pm Fashion on Friday with Antthony.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend – let’s hope the weather picks up – and see you all soon.

Much love,
Julia xx

Hi Julia, a belated Happy birthday and I’m sorry you missed Ascot yesterday. I saw you by the entrance, red & black dress but no hat and on your phone. Now I realise why you were minus a hat! It was a wonderful day and the rain held off. I didn’t like to approach you, I’m sure you get sick of all that. Hope you are feeling better. Maybe see you there next year? I might be brave and say hello!! Maybe QVC could do a pre Ascot fashion special? X

    • Julia Roberts June 22, 2016 at 11:35 am -  Reply

      Hello Nova
I wish you had come up to say hello – I never mind saying hi to people – I was disappointed, especially after battling the traffic, but my ‘eagle’ hat wasn’t finished in time and the other hat I was offered was just too heavy – I’m fine now. Hope you had a fabulous day and maybe see you next year.

    Hi Julia,

Wow sounds as if you had a super birthday, your friends and family made it special as it should be. Glad you enjoyed your holiday.

What a lovely surprise the cake Debbie brought in when you were on air, it really seemed to touch you. You deserved it, hope you got to have some of it.

I got your final book thank you, can’t put it down, nearly finished it, and will then put up a review.

Such a shame you did not make Ascot, maybe next year.

    Take Care.

    Love Jean.Xx

      Hello Jean
Yes I did manage to take some of the cake home and I had a small piece despite the fact that I’ve been watching my weight lately – it was chocolate & tasted really good.
I’m so pleased you are enjoying the latest book – it has been well received so far thankfully. A review would be great. Still haven’t decided which book to write next – several ideas floating around in my head!

I’m so pleased you enjoyed the Liberty Sands trilogy – I must confess to having cried several times when writing the books – I am a bit emotional! Still deciding what to write next but I’ll keep you posted on here or on my Facebook page and website http://www.juliarobertsbooks.co.uk
I’m nicely revived now and looking forward to being back on QVC tomorrow

      Hi Rose
I did wonder if jet skiing was an appropriate activity for a nearly 60 year old and then I thought…. go for it!
How are your fixtures? We have a very tough end to the season. Have you been watching Euro 2016? Not sure Roy is necessarily making the right decisions but at least we’re out of the group stage – well done Wales and Northern Ireland too (Ireland still to play as I write this).
      See you on Twitter

Hi Julia, firstly a belated Happy 60th Birthday from me. It sounds like you had a wonderful time celebrating with lots of love and surprises. I’m glad the weather was good for you. We were in Southern Spain last month and for our first 5 days we had dreadful weather – heavy rain and very cold. They said it was the worst weather for 6 years. Luckily it improved and we managed to have sun for our last 5 days.
Looking forward to seeing you back on air soon.

Hi Julia, it looks like you had a lovely birthday – fab pics! I love the purple dress you are wearing, is it from QVC?
I’ve finished ‘If He Really Loved Me’ and I’ve left a review on Amazon, hope you get chance to read it. I thought it was brilliant and just as good as the first! Really enjoying following the journeys of the characters, I won’t say anymore in case I give anything away to future readers. I can’t wait to read the last book in the trilogy but I am wanting to save it until my hol in Aug – haven’t booked anything yet but hoping to soon.
    Have a lovely week
    Xx

      Hello Alana
It was a great day from start to finish with a fair amount of champagne consumed!
The dress is not QVC – it’s M & S Per Una – I really liked it when I saw it on the rail & was delighted with the fit.
So pleased to hear that you liked If He Really Loved Me… I read all the Amazon reviews ( the least I can do when people have gone to the trouble of writing them) – so thanks very much for yours. A good idea to pace yourself with the final book as there won’t be another one now until November at the earliest.
Hope you manage to book a fab holiday for August
      Love

Hi Julia, our house/Apartment is on Cyprus side, in Coral Bay, not far from Paphos. It’s a nice area not to touristy with lovely sandy beaches in walking distance….. We did go to Javea as it’s only 15 mins or so from Denia, i can’t remember which day, but we left early and had a look round then had an early lunch at a lovely restaurant, and as we brought our towles etc spent the rest of the day on Arenal Beach. ! A very hot day i remember.
Hope you had some lovely prezzies for your birthday.

      Hi Kathy
We may even have been on the Arenal beach at the same time – we went on Thursday afternoon for my jet skiing adventure. There are some really nice restaurants along that stretch but also in the port.
I’m guessing you meant the Greek side of Cyprus – we didn’t cross the border when we went but I saw pictures of the beaches and they look lovely.
I had some really thoughtful gifts thanks including a silver white feather necklace – a symbol of positivity.
Gave mussed the weather since we’ve been back

      Hi Peggy
Thanks so much for your kind remarks about It’s Never Too Late To Say… With it being a trilogy, I’ve been most nervous about this one as it’s the conclusion to Holly’s story but the response so far has been thankfully good. Please spread the word for me and if you would like to leave a review on Amazon I’d be most grateful.
I haven’t started writing the next book yet – I may do a Christmas novella with a hint of humour… decisions, decisions.
      Thank you for your support
