Summer sabbatical

Hello again.

I’m feeling rather embarrassed about what I’m going to tell you, having been off work this year with a heavy dose of ‘flu and more recently after a knee operation. But I’m off again, this time fully planned and looked forward to!

My husband Olley is now retired after over 50 years as a successful – and very busy – press and celebrity photographer (he started young…!) ,and we have decided that it would be good to spend a little more time together. Never a better time than now as, even as a committed traveller, I firmly believe that when summer does finally arrive in the UK, there is nowhere in the world better to enjoy it than home!

We will head off to explore other places as well and I fully intend to relax and enjoy one of longest times I’ve had without working (except when the children were born) since I started my first job in live television, a BBC children’s sports programme called Stopwatch in the summer of 1983. I have a photo of me with Suzanne Dando learning to windsurf for the series. Well… falling off a windsurfer!

As you can see, our youngest – Billy, the last to be living at home with us – is a lot more at home on the water. It will seem very peacefulthis summer as we have just him on a plane to America.

He is heading to a summer camp in Pennsylvania where he will be teaching magic to some of the children and leading and looking after a group of 8-year-olds. We’ll miss him, as will his girlfriend Sherilyn, but I’m sure he will have a fantastic time – he loves to be with people and to amaze them and make them laugh with his card tricks. He’s always been a bit of an action man too, and will enjoy all the sporting opportunities that he’ll have there.

Hopefully he’ll meet up with lots of like-minded young people and create friendships for life. His visa allows him to stay for a month after camp to explore the country and we plan to join him there in September to celebrate his 21st birthday.

I’m really excited for him and proud of him, and I’ve been looking through some of my photos of him as he has grown from a skinny little kid to a young man who towers over me and thought I’d share some with you. The one feature common to almost every photo is his enormous smile – let’s hope he has reason to use it plenty in the coming months.

I hope this finds you smiling too!

I’ll be back at QVC at the beginning of August so until then, do take care.

Best wishes to you

Hi Kathy, So blessed to read hour blog and to say that you really deserve to have a well earned break..!!! From choice and not because of illness or ops which are extremely draining… Enjoy your time with Olley and I am reminded of my eldest son s favourite saying to me ‘Carpe Diem’ seize the day mum, seize the day ‘…. This after me having had a serious illness 12 years ago.. You do see things in a different light and more clearly too.

Aw, the photos of Billy and your Bex and Charlie too were so so gorgeous, and Barney too… Lovely memories, all part of the Olley tapestry you ve woven over the years between you.. A priceless treasure, unique to you but others can see and admire..

We all have our ojwn tapestry, some with darker threads of sadness but all still adding to the detail that creates a masterpiece..

It s clear to see the investments you have paid in to your family and now its time to enjoy the dividends and there will be so many more to come …

Can’t wait to see your follow up blog… Meanwhile, rest, refresh and heal, love, laugh and look around you with wonder at new discoveries… You will be missed but see you soon and as always, I keep you in prayers.. By the way, Loved the blog of the religious festivities you d seen at Easter time.. I felt I d been with you and I found it so very moving , reflecting myself, on the powerful message of truth.. Wonderful..!!!

    With love

Hi Kathy! I echo the previous ladies! You’ll be so missed. I just love watching you. You’re so normal and like Anne just a mother figure never using your ‘feminine charm’ in the wrong way as they say! I hope you and Olley have a brilliant break. You deserve it. Hope the kids are all well too. Bully has a stunning smile! Enjoy your summer!!x

Hi Kathy, I hope you enjoy a deserved break, we are off in August to return home to Melbourne Australia. So we may have to invest in some sort of satelite TV reception device I think to see QVC there? Always enjoyed watching you, you’re a star. Best wishes, Patsy x

Hi Kathy, hope you enjoy your extended holiday. I think I saw you in Kalami at the end of June, didn’t like to impose but am sure you had a cheerful & relaxing time there, it’s our favourite escape idyll these days & next year already booked!
