Thank you to everyone who entered our Garden of the Year 2017 competition. We loved seeing all of your photos and reading your entries.
But there could only be one winner and our garden expert, Richard Jackson, and a panel of QVC judges have chosen Alex Redfern and Joe Shannon from London. Congratulations, Alex!
As well as winning £250 QVC credit, Alex can expect a visit from Richard who will be popping round to take a closer look soon so everyone will be able to admire Alex’s garden on air in a couple of months’ time.
Here’s Alex talking about what makes his gardens so inspirational:
Our back garden has evolved over the last three years from a neglected patch to a tropical escape in London. We have packed it with tropical-effect plants to give a lush, relaxing feeling. We have extended our use of the garden to every day of the year through use of lighting, heating, a Swedish hot tub and seating/dining area.
In contrast, the planting in the front garden is ‘cottage garden’ in style, which allows us to grow most of the plants from seed or plugs (this is the part of gardening we enjoy the most) and to experiment with plants as cottage gardening is more relaxed.
The garden gives us so much pleasure in both the finished product and the actual gardening and, over the last few years, it has proved invaluable in helping my partner through illness.
As we grow most of our plants from seeds (in our popup polytunnels) we are always swamped with extra plants, which we take great pleasure in giving away to neighbours (and whoever will take them!)
Our garden is the central point of our life: it is where we entertain, where we ‘potter’ to relax and even when we are not in our garden we help out in others or plan for the next project or plants to grow.
